As well as the majestic lion and the magnificent elephant, the Giraffe is one of Africa's most iconic and classic creatures. Several sub-species are known to scientists: Reticulated, Rothschild, Nubian, Northern, Southern and Masai to name a few.

While many may look at thorny branches as hazardous to the hands, let alone tongues, giraffes love to use their specially long tongues to weave between the thorns and strip off the nutritious and delicious leaves as part of their diet. However large they may seem though, they are not immune to attacks by predators. Lions will from time to time, especially in lean times attempt to take down a giraffe so as to supply the whole pride, including hungry cubs, with a satisfactory meal that will last for days. Often the young are targeted as well, especially hyenas who enjoy harassing the mother in order to take her little one. Enjoy watching these animals when on safari and do not pass them off as just common!
